Flashback: Canning Dock Flash Fiction Competition – National Museums Liverpool, closes 5 Sept

Together with Writing on the Wall, National Museums Liverpool are running a writing competition this summer to creatively delve into the narratives that have been explored by Liverpool Black History Research Group when researching the historic Canning Dock.

The stories of Canning Dock can be told through many lenses. The dock had a key role in the development of Liverpool and much of the modern world, it’s deeply embedded in Liverpool’s Maritime history, and it had a pivotal role in the transatlantic slave trade.

So, get your pens at the ready, and choose from four prompts by writer Phil Olsen to help shape your story.

Competition Information

  • The competition is open from 28 July – 5 September
  • Age categories: under 11, 11 – 17, 18+
  • Word count: 500 maximum
  • Prizes will include NML membership for a year, a book bundle from Writing on the Wall and a voucher to spend at NML shops and cafes.
  • To get you thinking, writer Phil Olsen has created a series of prompts and writing exercise to help you structure your short story.

Visit liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/flashback-canning-dock-flash-fiction-competition for all the information you need on the writing themes.

Project Lovebomb Fundraiser – raising awareness of abuse

Project Lovebomb, is a project that helps to raise awareness of the red flags of abuse – such as “lovebombing” – to help prevent people getting sucked into toxic relationships and increase general awareness and understanding about abusive relationships. The project will also provide workshops for abuse survivors.

This project by Liverpool-based artist Emily Salinas, derives from personal experience of being lovebombed into an abusive relationship and wanting to prevent others from going through the same, but approaching it from a way where it can also help to spread a little joy and positivity.

This is such a heavy topic that makes some want to avoid looking at it (until you’re forced to because it’s too late and you ended up in one), but this project makes it more palatable to engage with by also celebrating and actively facilitating real appreciation and connections, reclaiming the idea of “lovebombing” in doing so.

(For those not familiar with the term “lovebombing” it is a manipulation tactic used to groom someone into an abusive relationship by flooding them with fake and grandiose displays of “love” including constant contact, compliments and big declarations that make it harder to leave once the abuse starts).

The workshops

The workshops for abuse survivors will run at women’s charity Whisc (in Liverpool) and be cofacilitated by Emily Salinas and Whisc staff trained in working with abuse survivors. These involve some craft therapy, support, guidance and signposting aswell as a chance to share experiences in a safe space and meet other people who have been through something similar. Survivors can find themselves quite alone after exiting an abusive relationship (or whilst in the midst of one).

The crafting element will involve making “lovebombs” which are appreciation packages to send to loved ones that also contain information about the origins of Project Lovebomb and what lovebombing is to help spread awareness as a side benefit to first showing appreciation.

The project is part of Liverpool’s “Independents Biennial” creative festival and the first of the appreciation campaigns (“The lovebombs”) will start 14 August, while the second (“The Appreciation Campaign” involving murals) will start 28th August.

Callout: Safe Spaces Reclaiming Community Spaces – Comics Youth CIC

Safe Spaces

We are looking for 15 young LGBTQIA+ creatives aged 14-25 to work with a £2,500 budget to plan, host and market a legacy event for your community.

A ‘legacy event’ is a one-off event that builds space for community to thrive, as well as opening up opportunities of change for marginalised people to continue long after the event has finished. Think of activism meeting party planning!

You will have access to a pot of £100 to be distributed between your team for your creative outputs around the event AND have the opportunity to be a paid Peer Evaluator of your project.

Whatever event you have in mind to promote community and inclusion within the arts, as well as supporting LGBTQIA+ mental health, we want to have you on board! If you have a particular interest in literature and publishing, this cohort of Safe Spaces is for you!

During this 12 week project, from September until November, you will partake in workshops where you will be up-skilled in hosting events, budgeting, commission work and more! Our weekly planning sessions will also be a space to socialise with like minded creatives.

All sessions are completely inclusive and are open to young people of all skillsets and levels – no prior experience necessary! Sessions can be held online or in-person depending on what you fancy. Sessions will be held at Make CIC, 2 Cleveland Street, CH41 6ND, Hamilton Square. Sessions will be held every Friday for 2 hours.

Email Ailis on ailis@comicsyouth.co.uk for more info on Safe Spaces.

There are a real lack of safe spaces in Liverpool, especially with the rise of homophobic and transphobic hate crime we have seen over the past year. Our ‘Safe Spaces Reclaiming Community Spaces Project’ is a chance to create spaces where LGBTQIA* and marginalised people can feel safe, seen and find creative community thanks to YOU!
