The Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge is a truly unique event where songwriters are challenged to write a new, original song inspired by a work of art.

Junior Dayvis (left) won the Audience Favourite Award and Danny Bradley (right) won the Judges’ Award at the 2021 Showcase Final

Now in its twelfth year the Songwriting Challenge welcomes back judges Jon Lawton (Owner, Crosstown Studios/producer), Kaya Herstad Carney (Threshold/vocal coach), Luke Moore (composer/Operation Lightfoot), Robert Vincent (award-winning musician and songwriter), and Alison Benson (musician, music teacher, and multiple Challenge winner).

To enter the Challenge a songwriter must visit the Liverpool City Region (Merseyside and Halton) during the entry period of 1st to 30th September and choose a piece of art that inspires them to write a new song. The songwriter or songwriters (collaborations are allowed) can choose any work of art on public display in the Liverpool City Region during the entry period, whether a painting, mural, statue, sculpture, stained glass window, pavement art, or anything else generally accepted as ‘art’.

Songwriters have one month from the launch date to write the song and submit it as a recording along with a copy of the lyrics and a photo of the art. The judges will listen to the art-inspired songs and mark each one on lyrics, melody, composition and originality.

The ten highest scoring songs will be revealed at the end of November and will be performed at the Showcase Final on Saturday 21st January 2023 at Leaf on Bold St where the Judges’ Award winner will be announced. The audience at LEAF will vote for the Audience Favourite award.

The winning songwriters in the two categories – Judges Award and Audience Favourite – receive the following prizes:-

Song professionally recorded by judge Jon Lawton at Liverpool’s Crosstown Studios.

A two hour vocal or songwriting lesson, from judge Kaya Herstad Carney.

A cello lesson or a cello part on the song recording, from Operation Lightfoot’s Luke Moore.

Liverpool Acoustic’s Graham Holland says:-

Every year the region’s songwriters never cease to amaze me with their talent and creativity, combining their love of art and music to create something truly special. Judges Kaya, Jon, Robert, Alison and Luke really do have their work cut out to rate them all and pick a winner. I don’t envy them in the slightest!

The Songwriting Challenge is open to anyone of any age living in the UK. However, entrants must have visited the Liverpool City Region (Liverpool, Sefton, Wirral, St Helens, Knowsley, and Halton) between 1st September and the closing date of 30th September.

The Liverpool Acoustic Songwriting Challenge is free to enter.

The full rules and conditions of entry will be available on the Songwriting Challenge website from Sunday 28th August 2022.

Entry to the Showcase Final on Saturday 21st January 2023 at LEAF on Bold Street will be by ticket only, available in advance from the beginning of December 2022. Volunteer reading helpers – Coram Beanstalk

Coram Beanstalk is calling for volunteers in Liverpool to come forward this summer to train as reading helpers with the charity and support local primary school children with their reading from next term.

Schools in Liverpool have a particularly high demand for reading helpers with many children waiting to receive vital support to not only boost their reading confidence and attainment but also inspire a love of reading.

In the wake of the disruption to children’s education caused by the pandemic, recent research by the Education Policy Institute found that children in the North of England suffered greater learning losses than those living in other regions.

With news that this year’s SATs results have slumped, as well as the projected summer learning loss that disproportionately affects children from disadvantaged households, Coram Beanstalk volunteer reading helpers will play a crucial role in re-engaging children in the autumn term.

New volunteers in Liverpool can begin training anytime during the year, and those able to start now can join training in August or September to be ready to start working with children as they begin the new school year.

Amy Lewis, Head of Coram Beanstalk, said: “Our volunteers are the face and heart of Coram Beanstalk, we really value the time they give to the children we exist to help. We love to hear of the fun they have in school and are delighted that 98% of our volunteers would recommend us to a friend. If you’re thinking of joining us, go for it!”

Local schools that partner with Coram Beanstalk are also clear about the benefits volunteers bring. Caroline Smith from Middlefield Primary in Liverpool praised the dedication of volunteer reading helpers and their ability to get children excited about reading: “Fully trained, professional in manner and all have lovely dispositions with our children.

They provide enthusiasm and support for children who are less confident in reading and give them the self-esteem to answer and ask questions in whole classroom situations. The children constantly ask ‘when is it my reading day’ and we have a queue of children ready and willing to take part”.

For Coram Beanstalk volunteers, one of the most rewarding aspects is the rapport they develop with the children. The one-to-one relationship means that volunteers can really get to know a child and find out which books might spark their interest. Liverpool volunteer Stephen Donoghue said: “At first, I saw four hesitant and unsure children. Now I see blossoming confidence, energy and wonderful smiles. It’s smashing being a Coram Beanstalk Reading Helper.”

From application to introduction to a local school, where a match is waiting, the whole recruitment journey for new volunteers is currently averaging 30 days from application to completing training and DBS checks.

For more information on becoming a volunteer, visit Coram Beanstalk’s website.

Liverpool Print Fair Stallholder Applications, closes 1 Sept

Stallholder applications are now open for the Liverpool Print Fair (5th & 6th November 2022).

Liverpool Print Fair

First and foremost this event is a print fair and will be advertised as such to the public. The primary focus is unique and affordable art, so the majority products at the fair should be paper based art prints.

If you sell homeware and accessories alongside your prints as part of a collection, we’re happy for you to bring those along too. Products such as greetings cards or comics and zines are also very welcome at the fair.

Stalls are more likely to be offered to people who create work using hands-on printing methods over those who work solely in digital mediums. We’re also looking for sellers with unique contemporary prints who avoid over-saturated trends.

We also make sure spaces are offered to different artists each year to keep the event interesting for the public. It’s possible that you may not be selected this time around if you have sold at 2 or more of our most recent events.

Read the full application criteria and apply via https://www.liverpoolprintfair.co.uk/apply-now/

Artists – dot-art/Homotopia Flag It Up project, closes 19 Aug

dot-art and Bruntwood are delighted to unfurl the winning design from their Climate Crisis theme AND announce the launch of the fourth open call for the Flag It Up project.

For this round they have teamed up with Homotopia, the UK’s longest running LGBTQIA+ arts and culture festival, to explore the issues facing this community in our city today. They are asking Liverpool City Region artists to design a flag to shine a spotlight on these themes.

Flag It Up is a partnership between dot-art and Bruntwood to create an exciting new platform for public art in Liverpool – using flags! As well as seeing their flag design brought to life, the selected artists receive a fee of £500 and a one year artist membership with dot-art.

The flagpole is mounted on the Grade II listed Exchange Court, 1 Dale Street, built in 1858 for the Liverpool and London Insurance Company and currently home to RBS. The large central flagpole, which is mounted above the main entrance and rises to the second floor, was unused for many years. This project aims to bring it back to life with a newly commissioned contemporary artwork flown as a flag, every 6 months.

In September 2020, they launched an open call for artists based in the Liverpool City Region to design the first flag, which was in response to the Black Lives Matter movement. Sumuyya Khader was selected and her work, entitled “Black, We Exist” was displayed for 6 months. Our second call, in response to International Women’s Day addressed issues around gender equality. Artist Charlotte Southall was commissioned and her work “Reach” flew for 6 months.

Their third call – to coincide with COP26 in Glasgow – was exploring issues of climate change and was won by artist Tommy Graham, whose flag is now on display. The work, entitled “Caution, High Tide” is a timely, powerful and thought-provoking statement.

Tommy says: “I have created a simple, stark and iconic hazard yellow flag denoting the high water mark, suspended 40+ft above street level. I often use fatalist humour to highlight serious issues, which is exactly what I’m aiming for here. I invite the audience to imagine a near future in which everything below the flag is completely submerged in water.”

For their fourth open call, we are asking artists to explore issues faced by the LGBTQIA community. Liverpool has a long history of being an open and welcoming city, which they would love to see celebrated, yet it has faced many challenges and difficulties, such as the recent homophobic and transphobic attacks we sadly saw in the city, which you may choose to reflect as well.

They would particularly like to hear from artists from communities marginalised within the LGBTQIA community or excluded from mainstream settings, and hear a range of new voices.

Instructions for Artists

• To apply, please complete the submission form here:
https://form.jotform.com/dotart/flag-it-up-4
• You will NOT need to produce a full design, just samples of previous work and any ideas you have of how you would approach the commission.
• The selected artist will need to produce a completely new and original piece of work.
• The final artwork will need to be suitable for reproduction on a 10×6 foot / 305x182cm flag and have visual impact from ground level.
• The original art work and copyright will remain the property of the artist.

The closing date for submissions is 5pm Friday 19th August
