The Muppet Christmas Carol In Concert

Disney’s The Muppet Christmas Carol will be presented live in concert this winter, with its musical score performed live to the film.

This is the third time the classic film will be presented to audiences across the UK following its premiere in 2021, with Broadway World calling the show ‘…the ultimate festive escapism.’

The Muppet Christmas Carol sees The Muppets perform the classic Charles Dickens holiday tale, with Kermit the Frog playing Bob Cratchit, the put-upon clerk of stingy Ebenezer Scrooge (Michael Caine). Gonzo, as Dickens, narrates the story with the help of Rizzo the Rat. The film also features Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit, Fozzie Bear as Fozziwig, and Robin the Frog as Tiny Tim.

MARA

It’s 1868. Morten is a discharged soldier scraping a living on his croft on the edge of Sweden’s ancient forests. His life is blighted by insomnia and filled with troubles made up largely in his own head.

Suddenly he begins to suffer nightmares. A friend tells him he’s plagued by a Mara – a possessed person who visits another in spirit form as they sleep. To free himself from a Mara, he must discover their identity. But who is it?

Funny, unsettling and moving, this solo storytelling performance is a whodunnit, a deep dive into the dreamscape of Swedish folklore, a delve into our oldest forests, a journey through our tortuous relationship with sleep and an exploration of what it might mean to be really awake.

You’ll be transported, entertained, immersed… and a walk in the woods might never feel the same again.

Reviews of storyteller Dominic Kelly’s previous work:

“What a treat” – The Times

“Storyteller Dominic Kelly catches the mood with unerring skill as he builds an atmosphere of excitement…” – Dorset Echo

“It shouldn’t be possible to conjure up such a rich, colourful and vibrant world in a plain, darkened room but he succeeded spectacularly.” – Litfest

Storyteller Dominic Kelly’s warm, witty and powerful storytelling style has captivated audiences around the world. In the UK he has performed at venues including the Barbican, National Theatre, British Museum, and The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival; and in theatres, festivals and schools in countries from India to the Arctic Circle.

He lives in the Lake District where he grew up and, when not storytelling, still thinks sitting in a tiny tent on a mountain in terrible weather counts as fun. But he’s married into a Swedish family, lived in Sweden for years, and he knows intimately the landscape, nature, culture and folklore of the country’s ‘Norrland’; in MARA, he takes you on an immersive, unforgettable journey into this place, though experiences we can all relate to.

His acclaimed performance Trickster was described as “compelling, funny and heartbreaking” by The Times, his show The Hero Light, as “gripping and satisfying… a rare event” and his most recent, The Big Blind, as, “a mesmerising performance”.

“Virtuoso storyteller, Sally Pomme Clayton has that rare gift of being able to transport the listener to other worlds by completely inhabiting those worlds herself. Her stories are full of colour and she uses language like a painter. Her telling goes through the skin, and settles deep in the marrow of the listening bones – a wondrous experience.” – Venue Magazine

“Sally Pomme Clayton is a gifted storyteller who can bring the wonder of the most powerful stories from the past to life for audiences of any ages.” – The Guardian

Green and Blue

An award-winning play about a developing friendship between a Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) officer and An Garda Síochána (Irish Police) officer on the Irish border at the height of The Troubles will be making its Birmingham and Liverpool premieres this October, before a series of debuts across the USA.

‘Green & Blue’, produced by Belfast theatre company Kabosh, will be staged at MAC Birmingham on October 24, followed by performances at Chester Lane Library, St Helen’s on October 25, and Hope Street Theatre, Liverpool on 26 – 28 October, as part of Liverpool Irish Festival

The show then heads across the Atlantic for a run of American dates, including shows in Atlanta, Pittsburgh, New York City, and Boston.

This critically acclaimed production has received rave reviews after a recent run in London, and  Dublin.  The Irish Independent declared it ‘a highly moving piece of social theatre’, with the Irish Times awarding four stars.

Paula McFetridge, Artistic Director of Kabosh said they were thrilled to be invited to perform this already well-travelled piece in England and America:

‘Green & Blue’ suitably sparks conversations about what we expect from our police forces. Although set on the Irish border, these conversations transcend  nations and oceans.  The play is incredibly relevant at a time when high-profile cases have put police standards in NI, England, and the USA under the microscope of public opinion.  This beautifully created play provokes audiences across the globe to reflect on the societal structures we deserve.

The play stars two of NI’s finest actors, James Doran and Vincent Higgins, reprising their roles from the original production which premiered at Girdwood Community Hub as part of the 2016 Belfast International Arts Festival.

James Doran plays Garda officer Eddie O’Halloran, originally from West Cork, patrolling the Monaghan side of the border while Vincent Higgins is David McCabe, an RUC officer whose experience of patrolling the Fermanagh side is vastly different from his southern counterpart.

Set in 1994, just before the IRA ceasefire, the pair recount their experiences, taking in the history of the conflict in Ireland, how they joined their respective organisations and the day-to-day life of working in a disputed territory. The play is laced with humour, insight, and lots of touching moments.

Despite their different backgrounds, Eddie and David strike up a common bond and learn more about themselves, their similarities, as well as their differences. David’s experiences are harrowing, steeped in violence and the threat of violence, while Eddie’s are much more ordinary except for his occasional run-ins with the local IRA commander.

But there is a brooding sense of what happens on one side of the border affects the other side. The two areas share a mutual dependence. With that air of comradeship felt by two people doing the same job, the pair  meet in a farmer’s field straddling the border and find out that the ‘grass is no greener’ on the other side of this invisible divide.

“Every line of the play is loaded, each scene redolent of the overall tragedy of Irish history and its wasted lives. These two ordinary men represent all of us and our place in a divided land. It allows us to glimpse the human beings behind the uniform.  It eloquently explores the human cost of man-made borders’ Paula McFetridge said.

It was inspired by Diversity Challenges’ ‘Voices from the Vault’: oral histories from former RUC and An Garda Síochána officers recalling their experiences as police officers during the Irish conflict.

Green & Blue will be shown at Hope Street Theatre, Liverpool, from Thursday 26 – Saturday 28 October.

Storm in a Teacup

Storm in a Teacup is a life affirming musical comedy from the creative team that brought you ‘On Cloud 79’ – an authentic play about living well with dementia (2017-2018), ‘Silver Bells and Cocktails’ – an amusing yet truthful look at life during lockdown’ (2021) and ‘Shaken Rattled and Rolled’ (2022).

Join them and the O’Brien family as we take a nostalgic look at life, love and music in the 70s.

All families are strange! The O’Brien siblings haven’t spoken in years. But when big sis, Angie dies, Tony & Bev have to sort through the family stuff. Remembering the 70’s when they were close brings Angie back. With the help of Morecambe and Wise, Sandy Shaw, Bowie, and David Soul, tears turn to laughter…and Pan’s People dancing. Can looking back help us to heal and go forward?  Or are we destined to repeat old, family habits?

Inspired by stories of families within our community ‘Storm In a Teacup’ looks at the petty squabbles that cause major problems. Grudges can go on and on.  Angie O’Brien never forgave little sister Bev for not admiring her new kitchen in 2013. Bev hasn’t spoken to brother Tony since he got drunk at her daughter’s wedding. And Tony has been miffed at the pair of them for as long as he can remember. No-one knows why. What happens if it’s too late to make-up?

I Am Steven Gerrard

Following its highly praised win as part of the inaugural new writing competition What Happens Next? in January this year, Sean McLoughlin’s debut play I Am Steven Gerrard will as part of its prize package receive its first full production at The Hope Street Theatre in January 2024, alongside £1000 production budget and dramaturgical support from Olivier Award-winning Papatango theatre company.

It’s Liverpool. The Champion’s League Final in Istanbul was 13 years ago. The buzz is still rife. The obsession is still real. Steven Gerrard has left Liverpool Football Club, but his legacy keeps on growing; a legacy that Shane wants to embody and emulate. Though Shane shares an ambition no different to many of those around him, it soon transpires that he yearns for something far beyond football.

And in a city where ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ is the mantra, why does Shane constantly feel like he’s the only one on the sideline? Shane is back home to see his dad for the first time in three years. To heal old wounds. To attempt to find his place in a world that he has never felt a part of. To get answers. What secrets will come to light? And who will they come from? Could these revelations have saved everyone from heartache?

Written by Sean Mcloughlin and Directed by Amy Roberts, the winner of What Happens Next? 2023 is a story of football, aspiration, music, Steven Gerrard, loneliness, reality television, love, religion, friends, loss, passion, enemies, Davina McCall, politics, ambition, family, virginity, past generations – and the impact they leave behind; I Am Steven Gerrard is a one-man play performed by Joe Cowin that explores the complexities of masculinity, and what it means to be a real man in society today.

Tip Tray Theatre’s artistic directors Evan Byrne and Maisy Gordon are “delighted with the choice of the judges to crown I Am Steven Gerrard as the winner of our first ever new writing competition. Sean’s play captures the beating heart of Liverpool perfectly in a powerful coming-of-age story that is beautifully portrayed in Joe’s performance and Amy’s sharp direction.”

Since 2022 Tip Tray Theatre have been the company in residence at The Hope Street Theatre and are fast creating an exciting and vibrant series of events, which bring together the vast talents the city has to offer. The Hope Street Theatre’s Artistic Director Sam Donovan states “When we first met Evan and Maisy, we could tell instantly the passion and drive they had to make a difference to the creative culture here in the city, the creation of What Happens Next? brought a real buzz to the city with new and old professionals creatively working together to showcase and champion new writing. It is a real honour to be able to support them and this production of I Am Steven Gerrard.”

What Happens Next? Will return directly prior to the run of I Am Steven Gerrard. Submissions for the competition is now open and seeks writers to submit the first 20mins of a play where by the end the audience wants to ask “What Happens Next?” for more information please visit www.tiptraytheatre.com
