3 act, 4 act, twists, red herrings, why do we need a structure? They will explain the importance of planning and writing within a framework, with practical examples of how different stories fit different techniques.They will also look over some of your work – so please bring a one pager of your writing for feedback!

This writing workshop is all about becoming a writer and sustaining your writing practice, how to write, what write and what skills and techniques to use.

Jenny and Catherine talk about their books – and also offer tips all the way through the talk on overcoming any problems with character, dialogue, place and narrative drive. This will be followed by some time for audience questions.

Catherine Cole is a Visiting Professor at Liverpool John Moores University where she was formerly Associate Dean, Research and Professor of Creative Writing and a member of the university’s Board of Governors. She is also an Honorary Visiting Professor at the University of Wollongong in Australia. She has published 11 books including crime fiction, non-fiction, short stories and memoir. Her poetry, stories, essays and reviews have been published in Australia and internationally and produced by BBC Radio 4.

Jenny Newman has been writing for over thirty years, usually fitting it in around a busy teaching life, and was formerly head of the Creative Writing department at Liverpool John Moores University. She has written two novels and non-fiction. Her short fiction has been broadcast on BBC Radio 4 and published in, among other places, The London Magazine and Riptide. Her new novel, In the Blood, will be published in September 2024.

Join Cameroonian-Kuwaiti actor and performance-maker Colette Dalal Tchantcho to explore some foundational tools for using your life experience to create performance material.

In this workshop Colette Dalal Tchantcho will help you to explore how to find your voice as a performance maker, ways of working in collaboration, and how to create layers in your work with music.

The workshop will be tailored for new makers looking to work with autobiography and experienced makers who are looking to refine their creative instincts. They will aim to create a warm, curious and collaborative space that is welcoming, inclusive and empowering to all.

About

Colette Dalal Tchantcho (Cole) is a Cameroonian-Kuwaiti Actor and Performance Maker who trained at Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. They are interested in bringing the unspoken into proximity with sacred acts and spaces in their work. Cole is currently developing Dreamer; a semi-autobiographical performance piece and body of work exploring how the nuanced reality of Arab society intersects with race, class and gender politics.

Join artist Laura Chen for a photo weaving and embroidery workshop, as part of Tate Liverpool’s East and South East Asian Heritage Month programme. Together you will explore their family photographs and their fragmented stories.

Chen’s project ‘Words from Dad’ is an experimental exploration of her Dutch-Chinese heritage. Using photographs from her family albums, Chen traces her mixed roots through her grandfather’s life stories.

Participants will have the opportunity to hear Chen talk about her work, before trying out photo weaving and embroidery techniques. There will be a refreshment break half way through.

This free workshop will take place in person at Tate Liverpool + RIBA North, 21 Mann Island, Liverpool, L3 1BP. You must register in advance to attend.

Artist bio: Laura Chen is a Dutch photographer, collage artist and writer. In 2024, she was selected as a finalist to participate in Peckham 24 Festival and Athens Photo Festival. ‘Words from Dad’ was highly commended at the Global SinoPhoto Awards 2024.

Join Jogja Disability Arts and DaDa for an exploration into disability arts practice in Indonesia.

Jogja Disability Arts is an organisation based in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Using art and the cultural model of disability, JDA aims to create space and access for meaningful participation for disability artists in Indonesia. JDA actively advocates models for inclusivity and equal opportunities for disability artists through various programs, such as festivals, exhibitions, research and art collaborations.

On Friday 13th September, Nano Warsono (Visual Artist, Lecturer at Indonesia Art Institute and Board Member of Jogja Disability Arts) and Triarani Utami (Researcher, Learning Facilitator and International Partnership Coordinator at Jogja Disability Arts.) will be offering a presentation and Q&A session to introduce the work of Jogja Disability Arts to Liverpool. Crime Fiction Writing Seminar

Calling all crime writers. Have you ever wondered what the police think about crime fiction and how their experiences compare to the fictional narratives on TV crime shows or in novels? And how important is authenticity in crime writing anyway? What do you struggle with in your own writing and where do you research all the necessary information about crime scenes and police procedures?

Join academics from LJMU to hear about policing, crime scenes, common crime fiction tropes and styles and what you can do to enhance your crime writing.

Carol Cox is a former police officer and now heads up higher education’s most successful unit for higher skills in policing in England, the Liverpool Centre for Advanced Policing Studies (LCAPS), part of LJMU’s School of Justice Studies and a model nationally, praised by chief constables and officers alike.

Heather Panter is a retired American police detective with 2,000 hours of police specific training and a combined 13 years of law enforcement experience. As a senior lecturer, she is the programme leader of LJMU’s MSc Policing and Criminal Investigations and the module leader on the following graduate modules: “Advanced Investigative Skills”, “Forensic and Medicolegal Death Investigations”, and “Drugs: Recognition and Identification”. She created and oversees LJMU’s policing studies crime scene science area where students and staff have a multidisciplinary learning space to conduct “mock” crime scene exercises/ research studies.

A 2 day intensive with Lucy Hopkins for clowns and creators of live performance

Connect to the creative, ridiculous spirit of your thing and work out how to share it with a roomful of people in a way that they will love. 

PROCESS: 

1/ Connect to mind, heart, body (and silliness) 

2/ Enjoy yourself (haha doesn’t really matter) 

3/ Try the thing you want to do (bravery gosh I mean this) 

4/ Work out how to go deeper, make it better and fall in love with it (sweet work) 

5/ Build pathway back to reality with treasures gained in workshop (absorb, reflect, share) 

WHAT WILL WE DO? 

We will set some intentions, move our bodies, play some games, show our beautiful, ridiculous selves and try to get to the heart of how to share that thing we love. 

WHY SHOULD I COME? 

To reenergise your creative practice by having a really silly time, get some helpful feedback, meet some cool idiots. To get all the benefits of working in an inspiring, honest and supportive environment and finding out what you didn’t know you could make yet. Also laughter is so so good for you.

Clowns and creators of live performance of all kinds who would like the experience of finding or working on something with guidance, in a group of creative ridiculous sorts. 

You can bring an idea or something you’re already working on, or come with nothing and discover something new. Both are an excellent approach.
