Silver Ring Workshop

Head along and join Noctua for a fully interactive workshop at their cosy studio in Liverpool.

You’ll have the choice of making either two slim stacking rings with a semi-precious stone or a wider ring with added texture. All the rings are made of sterling silver using traditional silversmithing techniques.

Keen participants will also have the option to make additional rings in the workshop. You can arrange this online while booking, or on the day with card or cash payment. An additional textured stacking ring is £10, a stacking ring with a semi-precious gemstone is £15 and a wide textured ring is £20.

During the class, you will practice a range of traditional silversmithing techniques.

They’ll start things off by sizing the ring and measuring the silver needed, before filing and shaping the silver Then you’ll use a blowtorch to solder it, adding unique textures with our collection of hammers, before polishing the ring to your desired shine and finally setting the stone (the traditional way – without glue!).

Members of the Noctua team will be on hand throughout this process to support, advise and teach you the skills needed while allowing you to make the ring independently. Those making stacking rings can choose from our wide range of semi-precious gemstones on the day.

This is a very interactive workshop which is suitable for complete beginners and people with prior experience of jewellery making. Everyone is welcome!

If you need glasses for reading then they recommend you bring them on the day, and they also recommend wearing old clothes. You will need to wear closed-toe shoes and tie up long hair.

They do not have a strict age limit but please enquire before booking a class for anyone under the age of 16 to confirm that the workshop is suitable for children. All under 16s will need to be accompanied by a participating adult.

Homesick for another world: Sustainabl...

This workshop will approach sustainability in writing: how can we avoid writers’ block and reliably create inspiration where there isn’t any?

Ellie Hoskins will be sharing her go-to method of harvesting examples of others’ writing and language that she likes and using them as the starting point for her own writing. They will be using a spider diagram/mind map format, using quotes that she has found in books and on the internet as prompts to expand upon with your own thoughts. When you have filled the paper and generated enough of your own words, you will form a poem out of them.

More about workshop leader: Ellie Hoskins

Ellie Hoskins is a multi-disciplinary artist and writer from Cumbria, now based in Liverpool. Her work is diaristic and frank, combining slapstick millennial nihilism with an immersion in the rituals and details of everyday working life. Making and sharing her visual/text works online, she seeks to capture moments of private absurdity with self-deprecating clarity, emphasising their universality as she brings them out into the light.

Ellie founded and facilitates the unofficial online art/writing school Phlegm, which culminated in an exhibition at The Royal Standard in 2021 and is currently in its second year. Other recent projects include a text installation on the exterior of Bluecoat, a collection of short texts commissioned by Montez Press, a reading at the ICA London, and a solo exhibition at OUTPUT.

Tiny Acorn Tall Tales

Have you enjoyed The Storybarn’s six-week Tiny Acorns course?

Due to lots of interest in follow-on sessions, they’re pleased to present Tiny Acorns Tall Tales.

These stand-alone sessions include Shared Reading for grown-ups, rhyme time for the little ones, and a chance to explore the beautiful surroundings of the Storybarn.

Tiny Acorns Tall Tales sessions are for children under 1 only. If your little one is older (or particularly mobile!) you might want to try Incy Wincy Rhymers instead.

Tickets are £6 per adult and include a free tea or filter coffee from The Ice Cream Parlour after your session. Under 1s are free but will still need to book a ticket.

Storybarn Open House

They are opening the doors of the Storybarn especially for families with autistic children under the age of 9yo, and families with sensory conditions so they can come and enjoy their wonderful imaginative play space in a stress free environment.

A Storyhunter will be on hand to help you if you need it; but they will not be running activities or group story sharing.

They will have a relaxed attitude to noise and movement, and give families a chance to explore the space at their own pace and in their own way.

They have also reduced the capacity for this event, so it will not be as busy as most of their other public sessions.

Children with additional needs are always welcome to join in at any of their events, and they will always do what they can to support you, but they also know that sometimes what you really need is the freedom to just do it your own way!

Eurovision Print Party

Make your own Eurovision keepsake and experiment with different printing methods at the Bluecoat’s family-friendly print party.

Trauma Informed Practice for Participa...

Although it’s very important to maintain the distinction between art and therapy, participatory artists are often in positions where they need to support their participants’ mental health.

This training is specifically for artists and facilitators and takes a person-centred approach to understanding trauma and incorporating this understanding into your creative practice.

This training will:

  • Provide an overview of the physiology of trauma and an insight from the perspective of a clinical psychotherapist;
  • Unpick popular perceptions and misuse of language around trauma and PTSD;
  • Offer practical tips for creating safe spaces for participants and avoiding practices which may retraumatise participants;
  • Create a space to explore problem solving using real-life scenarios.

This event is aimed at artists working in communities, theatre-makers and activists interested in using the arts as a tool for positive change.

Length: 3 hours

Location: Online, via Zoom

Ticket Cost:

  • For attendees supported by their organisations the full price of a ticket is £55.00
  • For freelancers and individual attendees the price of a ticket is £35.00
