Launch of Cuerpos del Tiempo (Bodies o...

Cuerpos del Tiempo (Bodies of Time) is a new collaborative project in partnership with Luma Creations, the leading Latin American Cultural organisation in the north of England, and is funded by the Esmée Fairbairn Collections Fund. This initiative will engage Latin American communities across the North West of England to help reshape the interpretation of the museum’s Latin American collections for display in 2025-2026.

The project will feature a redisplay of the Amoxtli Tezcatlipoca (ah-MOSHT-lee tes-kaht-lee-POH-kah), meaning “The Book of the Smoking Mirror” in Nahuatl (M12014), a rare pre-colonial Mexican manuscript, in the World Cultures Gallery at World Museum. As one of fewer than 15 surviving codices from this period, this fragile artefact stands as a powerful symbol of cultural endurance and indigenous heritage. The codex will be on display in late 2025.

This launch event will present a series of talks, dance & live music performances, craft workshops and a chance to speak to the curators of the Global Collections as well as the Luma Creations team. These will include:

– Presentation of the project by Meghan Backhouse, Lead Curator of Global Cultures at World Museum Liverpool and Francisco Carrasco FRSA, CEO & Creative Director of Luma Creations.
– Caporales dance performance by Luma Dance Troupe
– Talk on the Amoxtli Tezcatlipoca by Jose Sherwood Gonzales PhD Candidate Manchester Met University
– Music Performance by Luma Trio
– Talk on Indigenous Cultures of South America by Dr Beatriz Marin Aguilera, Derby Fellow of History at University of Liverpool
– Cumbia dance performance by Luma Dance Troupe
– Music Performance by Luma Trio
– Craft workshops throughout the afternoon.

Making Theatre from Lived Experience &...

Much of participatory theatre aims to tell the stories of communities who have been marginalised and amplify hidden stories that aren’t given space in the mainstream media.

The term “theatre from lived experience” has become common in the participatory theatre lexicon to describe an approach to making theatre with communities which deals with the real issues in their lives.

In this event they will explore creative exercises which support the process of making theatre from lived experience; and the ethics of this practice. Attendees will be introduced to approaches used by the Collective Encounters team in our participatory projects.

This training will be delivered by Michelle Richards (Associate Artist) and Marianne Matusz (Co-Artistic Director).

Online Event: This training will take place online using Zoom. You will receive an email with the link.

Black Orpheus Film Screening

Black Orpheus, or Orfeu Negro, is a romantic tragedy based on the play Orfeu da Conceição by Vinicius de Moraes. Set during Carnaval, two lovers embark on a tale of love and tragedy against the backdrop of late-1950’s Brazil.

It’s notoriety is both iconic and controversial; after sweeping the Oscars, Golden Globes, and receiving the Palme D’or, the music from the film became staples in Bossa Nova whilst it’s depiction of Brazil and people of colour has been perceived negatively with modern eyes. This beautiful dark romance will challenge you, delight you, bring you to tears and get you dancing up on your feet! Join them February 20th to grab some food and get involved in the post-screening discussion.

Tickets start from £1 so grab yours now by clicking the link on the right or on the door!

Lanre Bakare: We Were There

To celebrate the publication of acclaimed writer Lanre Bakare’s first book. Hear from the author and special guests at Tate Liverpool.

We Were There: How Black Culture, Resistance and Community Shaped Modern Britain is about a Black Britain that for too long has been unknown and unexplored – the one that exists beyond London.

Lanre Bakare has a stellar reputation as a Guardian writer, covering the intersection of art, race and culture. Lanre believes that when people think about the recent history of Black Britain, they inevitably think of London. Having grown up in Bradford, Bakare wanted to write a corrective to that; this book is that corrective. He takes us on an epic journey across the UK, visiting Birmingham, Liverpool, Cardiff, Bradford, Wigan, Manchester and more.

This insightful event with Bakare and special guests, will spotlight the extraordinary voices and stories of Black Britons and Black British culture.

We Were There: How Black Culture, Resistance and Community Shaped Modern Britain will be available to buy at this event.
