Unity Scratch Night

Off the back of the roaring success of the Unity Variety Night Fundraiser, they are delighted to announce a brand-new monthly scratch night coming to Liverpool this Autumn.

At their Open House Session one of the biggest parts of feedback was that their community needed a place to come and test out new ideas, so they are delighted to be launching this new series for artists to come and experiment on the Unity stage.

Introducing a new series of mid-week scratch nights:

  • Wednesday 25th September
  • Wednesday 23rd October
  • Thursday 21st November

Do you want to get involved or perform?

These nights are open for artists to come and test out new material on a live audience. See what works and what doesn’t as we develop together.

If you are interested in performing, it can be any genre, any stage of development or length. Please register your interest via the link provided here.

Look After Your Knees Workshop

Join Nat for a workshop exploring some of the techniques and approaches she used making her new solo show, co-created with Jamie Wood.

The workshop will be an opportunity to play, share and experiment, in a supportive environment, with new, old or yet to be conceived ideas.

They’ll move, write and hopefully do some stuff they can’t even imagine at this point.

An Evening with David Morrissey

Award-Winning Actor David Morrissey Returns to Liverpool Everyman for a Special Evening

The Everyman’s 60th birthday celebrations continue with a special event, An Evening with David Morrissey on Thursday 24 October. A Liverpool native and alumnus of the Everyman Youth Theatre, David returns to the stage where his career began.

David Morrissey has enjoyed a long association with the Everyman; from discovering the youth theatre in his early teens, to appearing on stage in the title role of Macbeth in the Everyman’s final production at the old building before its redevelopment in 2011, and as a trustee for the charity which runs the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse.

The Everyman Youth Theatre played a significant role in igniting David’s acting career. As soon as he stepped through those doors, David found a supportive space that provided a safe environment, fostering not only his passion for the stage but also valuable life skills and confidence. He also met the inspirational Roger Hill, the Everyman Youth Theatre organiser, a man with a punk spirit and unwavering belief in theatre’s power. Roger’s inclusive approach left a lasting impression on David and many of his peers.

This time they are celebrating the work of Welfare State International!

Founded in 1968 by John Fox and Sue Gill, Roger Coleman and others, Welfare State International was a loose association of freelance artists bought together by shared values and philosophy.

WSI first became well known for large-scale outdoor spectacular events. When the company began, taking art out of theatres and galleries into the street was considered revolutionary. The company’s name was originally ‘The Welfare State’ offering art for all on the same basis as education and health.

Under the Welfare State umbrella, a remarkable group of engineers, musicians, sculptors, performers, poets and pyrotechnicians invented and developed site-specific theatre in landscape, lantern processions, spectacular fireshows, community carnivals and participatory festivals. These creations were by turns beautiful, abrasive, didactic, provocative, disturbing, wondrous and even gently therapeutic.

Building Brilliant Language with Joe W...

The arts are competitive. The industry is underfunded. Resources are hard to come by. What does Liverpool have to offer to combat this?

Theatre in the city is currently abuzz thanks to ‘Boys from the Black Stuff’ (Liverpool’s Royal Court), ‘Up Next Festival’ (Unity Theatre) and ‘The Legend of Ned Ludd’ (Everyman Theatre) running alongside each other. With a mix of established and new works being embraced by audiences, creatives are constantly asking themselves the same questions: when/how/where can I get my opportunity?

In supporting these creatives, Joe Ward-Munrow will be facilitating an affordable workshop, ‘Building Brilliant Language’ on Saturday 11th May. Hosted by the Everyman Theatre, the writer of ‘The Legend of Ned Ludd’ will guide attendees through his process of how to use language creatively within their work; a key technique that has helped build his brand-new production.

Described by ‘The Financial Times’ as “thrillingly audacious”, the 249 variations of this play allow for every performance to be completely different to the previous. It therefore goes without saying that Ward-Munrow has a creative mind designed to be unpacked… and now it can be.

Those in attendance must be 18+ and will have the opportunity to watch the show following the workshop for a discounted price.
