Building Brilliant Language with Joe W...

The arts are competitive. The industry is underfunded. Resources are hard to come by. What does Liverpool have to offer to combat this?

Theatre in the city is currently abuzz thanks to ‘Boys from the Black Stuff’ (Liverpool’s Royal Court), ‘Up Next Festival’ (Unity Theatre) and ‘The Legend of Ned Ludd’ (Everyman Theatre) running alongside each other. With a mix of established and new works being embraced by audiences, creatives are constantly asking themselves the same questions: when/how/where can I get my opportunity?

In supporting these creatives, Joe Ward-Munrow will be facilitating an affordable workshop, ‘Building Brilliant Language’ on Saturday 11th May. Hosted by the Everyman Theatre, the writer of ‘The Legend of Ned Ludd’ will guide attendees through his process of how to use language creatively within their work; a key technique that has helped build his brand-new production.

Described by ‘The Financial Times’ as “thrillingly audacious”, the 249 variations of this play allow for every performance to be completely different to the previous. It therefore goes without saying that Ward-Munrow has a creative mind designed to be unpacked… and now it can be.

Those in attendance must be 18+ and will have the opportunity to watch the show following the workshop for a discounted price.

Simone Ellul – Be (a) Present!

In this workshop we will explore what is already present and work on not creating anything new. They will explore the importance of listening and of being truly present in a moment and the emotional response we may have.

Staying in the moment, not forcing the comedy in a situation, relying on what is already there, these elements help to give a scene more weight, lending itself to dramatic possibilities while at the same time not blocking the comedic opportunities present in any human situation.

Owen Scrivens – Death, Dying and...

Owen Scrivens has been improvising for 20 years. He has performed and taught regularly in Liverpool, Newcastle and Sheffield during this time with companies such as Sticky Floor Improv, Impropriety, Open Heart Theatre and Playing Dead Theatre.

He has also learned from teachers across Europe in a variety of improv styles. His main interest is where theatre and improvisation intersect, but this does not need to mean losing the fun and humor of spontaneous performance. At this years festival Owen will be performing Old Haunts; a show that has accessibility at its heart trying to reduce barriers to improvisation. He currently is director and teacher for SaSS Improv in Sheffield.

Over the last two years Owen has co-created Living.Dying.Dead an improvised theatre show that engages its audience on the subjects of death, dying and bereavement. The show was performed at last years festival but this year there is a workshop to further explore the subject.

They will look different ways of approaching death, from the absurd to the realistic. They will also dig in to the joys that truth, deep connection and emotion can bring in improv.

This workshop is suitable for any improvisers or performers that are willing to fully embrace the challenge of dealing with the subject of death.

My Beautiful Laundrette

Based on Hanif Kureishi’s iconic and Oscar-nominated screenplay and last brought to the stage in 2019 directed by Nikolai Foster, My Beautiful Laundrette is set in London during the Thatcher years and tells the story of young British Pakistani, Omar, who transforms his Uncle’s run-down laundrette into a thriving business.

After being confronted by a fascist gang, Omar recognises school friend Johnny and uses their history to diffuse the situation.

As they renovate the laundrette together, love blossoms between them.

This bold production of Kureishi’s ground-breaking film, directed by Nicole Behan, explores cultural conflict, gender equality, class and generational strife, all presented against a funky backdrop of 80s music and culture with additional original music composed by the Pet Shop Boys’ Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe.
