Metal Artist Residency, closes 11 Apr

Metal is excited to announce a call out for its 2022/2023 Artist-in-Residence programme, offering 12 opportunities to creatives who live and/or work locally to us. The offer is for a short period of focused research and development time for a new/existing project, or for a body of work that is already in development.

The opportunity is open to artists working in any artform and whilst it is not compulsory, we do have a particular interest in artists and ideas that respond in some way to Place – for example, through connections with people, passions, histories, landscape or other uniqueness of the places and communities that we are part of.

Individuals, collaborations, or collectives can apply and must be based in one of our local areas:

  • Peterborough or Cambridgeshire and surrounding villages
  • Liverpool City region (all boroughs)
  • South Essex (Basildon, Brentwood, Castle Point, Rochford, Southend-on-Sea Borough, Thurrock)

If you have an queries, please contact the Metal site closest to your location (contact information below)

In response to the success of our hybrid model of residency, we will continue to offer this going forward. Artists can choose to work from home or in their own studio supported by Metal staff online, from our Metal spaces, or a combination of the two.

Metal’s Offer:

Each selected artist will receive a fee of £1000 paid in two instalments.

You can access up to 20 days of:-

● the facilities in our buildings including studio and rehearsal space

● staff time to support your research (e.g. mentoring and feedback sessions, brokering relationships with communities or support with funding applications).

You will also have the opportunity to participate in our other programmes including Metal New Artist Network (MNAN) and Future Network. We also offer sessions where the selected Artists-in-Residence can meet and share ideas and thoughts as part of a peer-to-peer network.

Examples of previous residencies:-

● Ryan Gilmartin developed an immersive video installation by remixing live and archival footage from the 50’s & 60’s to create an audio-visual experience about space and the moon.

● Artist and Filmmaker Amber Akaunu used the residency to create an open call out for people with afro hair to share their “Afro Hair Ritual” for a new film work.

● Sadie Davidson, an award-winning slam poet used the residency to explore her first memoir style novel

Feedback from previous artists in residence

‘My residency with Metal took place over the first lockdown. My plans completely changed, the residency was from home. The level of support I received was enormously helpful. I’ve never had the experience of working with an organisation that so completely believed in artists. It was life saving at a very difficult and stressful time.’

‘I felt really well supported. For months ahead of the residency, I was given access to the team at Metal in order to develop contacts, network, research, and to receive help with applying for ACE funding. The actual time spent in physical residence was divided into a series of visits and so it felt much longer than a month. I loved the opportunity to host a networking dinner party, and met some really interesting people in a way that was much more informal.’

‘I did not expect it to kick off so much connection and interaction locally, which has been an absolute joy.’

‘It gave us money and time to develop an existing project. It was well supported, and Metal really put the artist at the centre of the residency which opened many other doors for us.’

‘It was extremely helpful to be surrounded by an organisation who clearly believed in what we were doing. Our confidence when talking about our work has improved so much more!’

‘The residency allowed me to pilot ideas and test out research models ready to apply for an Arts Council Project Grant.’

About Fulu Miziki Kolektiv

Fulu Miziki Kolektiv is an Eco-Friendly-Afro-futuristic-Punk-Assemble collective of artists who come straight from a future where humans have reconciled with mother earth and with themselves. This multidisciplinary collective of artists are based in the heart of Africa, in the Congolese capital city Kinshasa.

For several years now, its members have conceptualised an orchestra made from objects found in the trash, constantly changing instruments, always in search of new sounds.Making their own instruments, performance costumes, and masks is essential to the approach of the collective’s core musical ideology.

Their unique sound supports a pan-African message of artistic liberation, peace and a severe look at the ecological situation of the Democratic Republic of Congo and the whole world. For Fulu everything can be recovered and re-enchanted.

Volunteers – Africa Oye 2022

Africa Oyé celebrates 30 years in 2022, with their festival set to take place over the weekend of 18th and 19th June.

Each year, an enormous amount of effort goes into ensuring that the festival takes place and remains free of charge and open to all. Due to the ever-growing popularity of the event, this is becoming increasingly challenging.

The support of volunteers is a crucial part of the festival – the opportunity to meet their audience only comes around once a year. You will be working with them focusing on ensuring the survival and growth of the festival by creating positive relations with our attendees and raising funds to sustain future festivals.

They ask for a minimum of 2 hours of your time during the Festival weekend – to help them:

– Raise donations to ensure the event stays free and open to all
– Distribute important information to Festival attendees
– Support the Audience Development and data capture programme, that is crucial to Africa Oye’s future

No prior training or experience is required and a briefing session will be provided before you commence your Volunteer shift.

The two days are a fantastic celebration of the music and culture of Africa, and volunteering will give you an opportunity to be part of the festivities, to meet a variety of people and help keep the event free for future generations.

The Flow Project – GoFundMe campaign

The Flow Project is a not-for-profit community-focused initiative that aims to improve the wellbeing of the local population by encouraging them to play, learn, dance using flow arts.

They plan to keep people flowing and keep the community growing by providing free and accessible gateways into a discipline that combines the benefits of sport and art. They will create space to meet people, be active, experience something new, strengthen self-confidence and rediscover playfulness.

Why they are doing this

They are both passionate flow artists who have felt the lived benefits of fire, flow and circus arts. They’ve seen its transformative power connect people and enrich lives, plus heard countless stories (including each other’s) about how flow has helped people find a purpose or get out of a depression.

What they need money for

They are asking for money to run free sessions that will bring flow arts to the people of Liverpool, develop the local flow community and positively impact the society around them.

1. FREE INDOOR FLOW SESSIONS at the Black-E

They will set up a space at the incredibly inspiring community hub of the Black-E. The Black-E is already the centre for the Youth Circus, where we volunteer to teach children circus skills.

They are looking to create a similar space for adults, something that exists in other cities but that Liverpool is lacking at the moment. They will run these sessions for free every Monday, creating a diverse and inclusive experience for participants, centred around moving, having fun, sharing knowledge and emphasising personal growth and wellbeing.

Admission to this sort of thing is usually ticketed, costing between £10-15 per person. They have decided not to ticket these events and instead keep them free and open. This is because we want to give something back to the community and offer these sessions in the spirit of gift economy. Still, they have to cover the rent to offer this amazing space, and that is why they’re asking for your help.

2. FREE OUTDOOR FIRE SESSIONS

Starting with Sefton Park, they will host monthly fire sessions at outdoor locations in the city, providing a chance for flow artists to meet with local communities and inspire people to engage with the project.

Your money will cover the costs of space rental, consumables and promotion to get the word out about this work and access the people who need it most. They will provide all of the necessary equipment to start this off and create guided sessions to offer a gentle introduction to the benefits of the art.

£500 will cover the costs of running fire and flow sessions for one month

£1000 will allow them to run this for two months

£1500 will cover three months

Any donation that you can make is welcome. The Flow Project is not-for-profit, so you can be sure that all money received will go directly into the running costs. Provided they receive the initial financial support to get this off the ground, they will set this project up to be community-led.

They will gather volunteers who will help to facilitate flow sessions, manage funds, organise events, plus seek further funding for project development.

Keeping Liverpool City Region Music Venues on the Map, 22 Mar

If you run a music venue or if you are a promoter who puts on gigs in the city region (Liverpool, Wirral, St Helens, Sefton, Halton and Knowsley), the Liverpool City Region Music Board would like you to attend this event, running on March 22, 6-9pm at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic.

The Board would like to meet with you and hear your thoughts and opinions, while also giving you an opportunity to learn about and contribute to the development of a post-pandemic action plan that focuses on ‘safeguarding and protecting local music venues’.

The objectives of the event include mapping the region’s music venue infrastructure (led by Liverpool University), identifying priorities for the sector, opportunities for future planning and guiding future policy-making.

The Board recognises importance of venues as being at the centre of the LCR’s music ecology, and also the significant impact that the various lockdowns have had on all of you. As a Board we have strived to talk to and work with venues across the City Region but we know we haven’t reached everyone. That’s why this meeting is so important to us.

We understand how busy you all are, so we have picked a day and a time that will hopefully allow as many people as possible to attend and have their say. And for those of you who can stay on a bit longer there is a chance to have a drink, catch up with old friends and hopefully make some new useful contacts as well.

We invite you to share your insight and concerns for the sector, which will enable the Board to understand and support wherever possible, and continue to lobby around important you are facing, in order to protect live music locally.
