Reading Helper Role – Coram Beanstalk, Liverpool

Coram Beanstalk believes that when a child becomes a reader, they get the very best chance in life, and every child deserves that.

Each week, across England, our trained volunteers deliver fun, interactive, reading experiences. They provide one to one support to children, who are behind, giving them the help and encouragement, they need to catch up – to switch onto reading, learn to read and become readers for life.

The role of a Reading Helper places you in the heart of primary school life. Youll be leading reading sessions that bring a positive reading experience to children outside of the classroom. Children will benefit from someone giving them one-to-one attention, showing them how much fun reading can be and the purpose reading has in their lives.

You will build a positive learning relationship with individual children aged 4-11, maintaining a regular weekly commitment. This consistency will build confidence, improve their engagement with reading and allow their reading skills to rocket!

You will need to:

  • Attend school weekly in the afternoon session(s) during which youll see the same children each week
  • Independently lead your sessions; youll have access to our brilliant books, online portal and will quickly get into the swing of what works well for each child
  • Liaise with school staff and our team as required

Volunteer tutor (English or Maths) – Action Tutoring, Birkenhead

Action Tutoring unlocks the potential of children and young people who are facing disadvantage. We are tackling the attainment gap head-on by forging partnerships with schools nationwide. Our trained volunteer tutors are empowered to enable pupils to make meaningful academic progress, opening doors to future opportunities.

The opportunity

Education in this country isn’t fair. If you are from a poorer socio-economic background, you are less likely to achieve academically than your peers.

As an English or maths tutor, you will choose one of our partner schools and work with 1-3 pupils for an hour a week, across the course 10-20 weeks. Sessions are either delivered on the school premises or online, at the same time each week. You can choose to support children preparing for their SATs (ages 9-11) or GCSEs (ages 14-16). We provide all of our tutors with training, workbooks to use in sessions, a DBS check and travel expenses up to £5 per session.

Face-to-face opportunities are available in Birmingham, Bristol, Liverpool, Southport, Wirral, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield, London and Sussex. Links to our school locations can be found here at the bottom.

You can tutor online from anywhere in England, Scotland and Wales. Please note we cannot currently accept tutors who live outside the UK or are under the age of 18. Learn more about our virtual programmes here – https://actiontutoring.org.uk/reacharea/virtual-programmes/

Volunteer Reader Leader to deliver a Shared Reading group at The Old Library

The Reader and The Old Library are looking for volunteers to help lead a Shared Reading group.

The Reader are a national charity that wants to bring about a Reading Revolution so that everyone can experience and enjoy great literature, which we believe is a tool for helping humans survive and live well. We support hundreds of Shared Reading groups across the UK and provide partners and volunteers with training, resources and support.

The Reader and The Old Library are looking for volunteers to help lead a Shared Reading group on a Wednesday 2-3pm.

If you love great literature and people- do get in touch to hear more about the opportunities available and explore our Read to Lead training offer.

How does Shared Reading work?
A group of people, one of them a trained Reader Leader, reads a great novel, short story or poem aloud. We stop and talk about what we have read. There is no need for group members to read aloud or speak – it’s fine to just listen. The idea is to create a space where people feel at ease.

Why volunteer?
You can make a difference in your local community, meet new people and learn new skills. All volunteers take part in a transformational Shared Reading training programme and can access an amazing range of literature resources.

As well as supporting Shared Reading in The Old Library, you’ll become a valuable member of The Reader and will be one of the first to hear about our exciting and frequent events happening online and in person.
