Call for Contributions: Open Archive – Arena Studios’ 40th Anniversary, opens 26 Jul ’25

Arena Studios is celebrating 40 years of supporting artists in Liverpool! To mark this milestone, they are creating an exhibition and digital archive that will gather stories, photographs, film, and other archival material from across the decades. This will be an ongoing, evolving archive open to continuous contributions.

They’re not entirely sure of Arena’s exact founding date – sometime between late 1984 and early 1985. Maybe you can help fill in the gaps? Were you involved in setting up Arena Studios or a member in its early days on Duke Street? Do you have memories of Arena’s famous Auctions, its moves to Jordan Street and then Elevator Studios, or its fun filled Light Night events? Perhaps you helped with its management or simply have a story that captures the spirit of Arena at any point in its history.

They’re looking for:

•       Stories and memories (written or recorded)
•       Photographs and video footage
•       Posters, flyers, and other memorabilia
•       Anything else that helps tell Arena’s story

They know there have been plenty of ups and downs along the way. We expect controversy and contradictions!

If you’ve ever been part of Arena Studios, they’d love to hear from you. Please send your contributions to info@arenastudiosandgallery.com.

Help them to bring together the history of 40 years of Arena Studios and celebrate its impact on Liverpool’s art scene!

DATE FOR YOUR DIARY!

There will be a 40th Anniversary event on Sunday 14th September from 1pm in the Baltic Arts Bar (and Elevator Gallery) 27 Parliament Street, Liverpool L8 5RN.  The event will be open to the public and everyone is welcome!

Celebration

Something we celebrate is something we’re publicly proud of – is there something not enough people celebrate? What do you want to tell absolutely everybody about?

Connecting

We connect to people, places, animals, plants and objects everyday, some more meaningful than others. How do you feel about these connections and how would you show them?

Futures

We all experience our climate and think about the future of our planet. What around you do you see as a positive? What would you like to keep for the future, and what would you like to change?

Shared space(s)

Where we choose to spend our time reveals a lot about a person and when shared, it can begin to represent the ideals or wants of a community. Your town, cafés, your friend’s house, your favourite bench – every place holds hundreds of stories. Which stories will you choose?

Movement

Running clubs, dancing, travelling or the passing of time. Think creatively – what moves you?

Care

Care and caring looks different to each person. We can care for our friends, we can care for our communities, we can care for our environment. We can feel cared for. What does care look like for you?

Entry is free and open to anyone living in the city region (Halton, Knowsley, Liverpool, Sefton, St Helens, Wirral).
