SOL Joint Course Leader – Metal, closes 27 July

Please send a CV by email to: jon.davies@metalculture.com by Wednesday 27 July, 5pm with details of two professional/educational references and any ESOL language qualifications you hold. Please include the subject line ‘SOL APPLICATION’.

About Metal

Metal was founded by Jude Kelly CBE in 2002. Metal provides innovative, multi-disciplinary residencies and development opportunities for artists from the UK and overseas, from spaces in Southend on Sea, Liverpool and Peterborough. Interested in how artistic process, and the practice of artists can input into, and influence social, economic and political issues of the day, Metal works with artists, educators, communities, individuals, businesses and agencies across all sectors to create a wide range of activities and projects that include residencies, exhibitions, commissions, festivals, performance, talks, workshops and publications.

About SOL

SOL (Second or Other Language) is a programme of informal English language study focussed around a creative curriculum informed by the studios and galleries of Merseyside. The sessions are open to refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants. This free programme seeks to drastically change the level of interaction between newcomers to this city, and the institutions that help to define it.

About This Role

As joint course leader you will be co-leading groups of up to 20 participants in educational sessions and hands-on workshops. The sessions are weekly, with most sessions taking place at Metal’s base in Liverpool at Edge Hill Station. The role may also involve organising visits to galleries and cultural spaces relevant to the course, working with artists and staff to deliver creative learning experiences.

The curriculum will use famous art pieces as well as work exhibited in Liverpool’s galleries to act as cues for creative learning. The participants will learn English through focused language learning at the beginning of each session, and then be supported by learning through mark-making and other artistic practices. In addition the course participants will be offered 1-on-1 tutoring sessions weekly. While we require the course leader to be a qualified ESOL tutor, this is NOT an ESOL course. It is a top-up in addition to any other provision participants currently access, and is designed to build on their language skills through art and creativity, and to help them access cultural spaces in an informal way.

You will be working with the project team at Metal and supported by Soraya Lemsatef (SOL Joint course leader) to develop this course, and you will be responsible for recruitment, delivery, and for any volunteers helping with sessions. Reporting and evaluation will be carried out with Metal, volunteers, partner venues and participants after the course.

This is a unique opportunity for artists and teachers with a passion for helping vulnerable migrants in Liverpool; you will be engaging with hard-to-reach groups and working across a broad range of services across the city. We welcome enthusiastic and conscientious individuals who are full of ideas and committed to unlocking Liverpool’s cultural offerings to the group.

The sessions are open to all levels of English Language ability, and rather than following a formal course of accredited ESOL, the results will be focussed on creating new social circles, and fostering creative talent.

● Liaising with other local arts organisations and artists to support the delivery of sessions, providing context to participants of local arts and culture
● Responding to email enquiries for joining the course, arranging tutoring sessions and communicating with participants

2. Safeguarding

● Offering pastoral support to participants
● Report any Safeguarding issues to Metal maintaining a professional and understanding approach at all
times
● Deliver sessions in line with Metal’s Safeguarding policy and Health and Safety policies

3. Delivering the course

● Attending all sessions and working closely with the joint course leader to lead the group
● Keep sessions to time and follow learning outcomes and objectives
● Allow learners to thrive and build their social circles
● Be available to deliver 1-on-1 tutoring for participants

4. Evaluation

● Support the evaluation activity
